For decades and decades bowling has been a very popular sport in Schenectady County. Probably as popular as any other. Check out the area newspapers fall through spring and even the summer months, and you will see numerous leagues and a great number of bowlers participating. Both men and women, young and old. Among these bowlers, we have had some top-level ten-pinners who could compete with the best nationwide. In the 1950s there were 14 bowling establishments and a total of 172 alleys in Schenectady County. They were Woodlawn, Scotia, Mont Pleasant, Williams, Skyway, Broadway Recreation, GEAA, The YMCA, Star, Van Vranken, Bellevue, Hawk, The Elks, and St. Cyril.
