Williamsport hosted Reading in a minor league baseball game in the 1980’s, and a memorable moment took place in the city where the Little league World Series is held. Reading had a runner on third base, and Williamsport catcher Dave Bresnahan had a trick up his sleeve. Bresnahan had a potato hidden in his catcher’s mitt, and after a pitch, he threw it wildly toward the third baseman. The runner thought it was a baseball , and he ran home. When he arrived at the plate, Bresnahan met him with a baseball he was holding. The umpire did not find it humorous, and he called the runner safe. Breshanan’s bosses weren’t to happy with what had occurred either, and he was let go the next day.
