There are/were a lot of Penn State football alumni and fans in the Capital Region, and some can remember back to the days of Rip Engle. Before Joe Paterno took over the reigns, Engle was the football coach of the Nittany Lions from 1950 to 1965. Engle also coached at Brown from 1944 to 1949, and Paterno was his skilled quarterback and team leader. Engle’s overall coaching record was 104-48-4. His best season was 1962, when Penn State went 9-2, ranked ninth in the country, and played in the Gator Bowl.
