Dean Smith rates among the greatest college basketball coaches of all-time. He took over the North Carolina program in 1961. At that time , the Tarheels were under fire for recruiting violations, and Smith quickly turned North Carolina into the toast of Tobacco Road. A gentleman and under control coach, Smith had most of his teams primed to make a run at the national title. In his 36 years at the North Carolina helm, the Tarheels took part in the NCAA Tournament 27 times and went to the final four 11 years. Smith’s teams won the NCAA championship in 1982 and 1993.
