Dean “The Dream” Meminger was the First Coach of the Albany Patroons

They could have been called the Albany Leprechauns, but the fans chose “Patroons” in the name-the-team contest (Patroons were Dutch landowners during Albany’s history).  They were an expansion franchise in the Continental Basketball Association.  The Patroons played their first game in 1982, and Dean “The Dream” Meminger, a former college star who played for Al McGuire at Marquette, was the coach.  Former Niskayuna stars John Leonard and Dan Terwilliger were on the team.  The Patroons began the season with a 5-1 record, but as the season went on , they went on a losing streak, and Meminger lost his job.
