Detroit Lion Gambler Alex Karras

In 1963, the Detroit Lions suspended their All-Pro tackle Alex Karras for one year for gambling.  Two years later, he was named co-captain of the team.  His first game, he had to take part in the coin toss at midfield.  The referee said, “Captain Karras, I will toss the coin and while it’s in the air, would you please call heads or tails.”  Karras, hardly audible, replied, ” I’m sorry sir, but I can’t.  I’m not allowed to gamble.”
