Dick Grubar was a star basketball player at Bishop Gibbons in the mid-1960s, and arguably is the greatest point guard ever to come out of Schenectady County. He was the Schenectady County Player of the Year two years. Grubar went on to play for Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina, and his Tarheel teams went to the final four of the NCAA Tournament three years. In 1968, he and his Carolina teammates went up against coach John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins in the championship game. The Bruins, led by the magnificent Lew Alcindor, blew the Tarheels out of the gym by a score of 78-55. Grubar’s senior year, he was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Tournament Team.
