Don Bassett, Dave Santos & Leo McDermott

Don Bassett – Basketball coach, Don Bassett, a thorn in the sides of Capital Region basketball teams for many years, made a return to the sidelines, taking over the Catholic Central hoop program in 2004.  This was after Bassett had taken a 14-year hiatus from the game.  He replaced Rich Gilooly. Previous to taking over the Crusaders, Bassett had a 303-141 record as the Catholic Central and Troy High head coach from 1968-1990.

Sellout Crowds – Over the years, Amsterdam High School featured such basketball talents as Billy Hojohn, Howie Derrick, Dave Santos, and Don Safran.  these stars and their supporting casts packed  the gyms of their Capital Region opponents.

Leo McDermott – Leo McDermott of St. Columba’s High School in Schenectady became the first area player to average over 30-points per game in 1958.  McDermott played his college ball at Xavier.
