Gail Sykes set a women’s course record at Ballston Spa Country Club, when she carded a 73 in 1963. What made this feat even more impressive was that she did it off the men’s tees. Over the course of her career, Sykes was named the Schenectady Gazette County Golfer of the Year five times. She also won the NCAA Championship and was named to the very first Women’s All-American team. Later, she became a high school teacher in Raleigh, North Carolina.
