It’s nice to see the Daily Gazette foul shooting tournament is coming back. I remember competing in it back in 1962, which was the first time it was held. I didn’t do very well against some of the true marksmen. This year’s contest will be held at the Pat Riley Center at Schenectady High on March 9. The last time it was held was back in 2003. It is for both boys and girls from Section II. Participants will be shooting 25 free throws, shooting five free throws at five different baskets. Over the years, 11 boys have shot a perfect 25 for 25. The most recent among the boys was Jeff Juron of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, who did it in both 2002 and 2003. No girl has ever been perfect at the line, but Schenectady’s Jackie Knapp (1995) and Val Klopfer of Bishop Maginn both hit 24 shots. Who will it be this year? Among the boys, it might be Joey Lufkin of Argyle or Ralph Erickson of LaSalle. The girls have a number of deadly free throw shooters. Among them are Courtney Lane of Bishop Maginn who sinks around 89% of her free throws, or Sydnie Rosales of Colonie who is accurate on a little more than 85% of her shots from the line. Then again, who knows, there might be a sleeper out there. For more information about the contest contact Steve Boynton, the Athletic Director at Schenectady High.
