The RPI hockey team captured the 1954 NCAA Championship in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Gordie Peterkin’s sudden death overtime goal. They beat heavily favored Minnesota, 5-4. It was a cinderella story with a string of unlikely victories over the country’s top teams. Coach Ned Harkness had his club playing solid hockey entering the tournament. The win over the Golden Gophers was one of the biggest upsets in the history of college sports. The underdogs, from an engineering school in Troy, New York, also beat 3-time NCAA champion Michigan in the tourney.
