Capital Region sports fans and music buffs welcomed the Knickerbocker Arena (now the Pepsi Arena) with opened arms on January 30, 1990. Jim Coyne, the Albany County Executive at the time, had the vision and took the initiative to have the arena come to fruition. It was a 66 million dollar facility, which matched many large facilities around the country. “I can’t believe this is Albany,” was the reaction by one visitor. The arena holds around 15,000 for basketball, hockey, and other events. Hats off to Jim Coyne and the Albany County Council for supporting him and making it happen.
