When the Capital Region’s Eddie Fyvie was 15 years-old, he held a yellow belt in Jiu Jitsu. It is the highest level in the 15-17 year-old age bracket. Fyvie at the time rated among the best grapplers in the nation. He had a remarkable season in 2002, when he won the Nationals in Bayonne, New Jersey, the New Jersey State Title, the New York State Championship, the Battle of the Beach Tourney in Wildwood, New Jersey, and the New England Championship. His coach was Renzo Garcia from Brazil. Garcia was the most renowned instructor in the world. Chad Beaty and Matt Serra of Long Island also coached Fyvie. Fyvie’s goal was to fight in the Ultimate fighting Championship on television.
