Lee Wallard Wins Indy 500

The Capital Region’s Lee Wallard will be inducted into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame in September, 2013.  Wallard set a new mark in the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day, 1951.  He won the race at 126.244 mph  to break Bill Holland’s 1949 record.  Wallard had been in the money two other times, finishing sixth in 1950 and seventh in 1948.  He received $63,512 in cash, a $4,000 Chrysler pace car, and other prizes for his record performance.
