Mike Deane vs. Fran McCaffery at Siena College

Mike Deane and Fran McCaffery are arguably the two best coaches ever to lead the Siena College basketball program.  Deane was at the reigns from 1986 to 1994, and McCaffery was the head coach from 2005 to 2010.  But who was the better of the two can be debated.  I’ll give you the facts, and you make the pick.

Mike Deane

1986-87 – 17-12 (12-6 in the MAAC) – finished tied for 3rd  in the MAAC

1987-88 – 23-6 (16-2 in the MAAC) – finished 1st in the MAAC – NIT first round

1988-89 – 25-5 (16-1 in the MAAC) – finished 1st in the MAAC – NCAA second round

1989-1990 – 16-13 (11-5 in the MAAC) – finished 3nd in the MAAC

1990-91 – 25-10 (12-4 in the MAAC) – NIT quarter finals

1991-92 – 19-10 (11-5 in the MAAC) – finished 3rd in the MAAC

1992-93 – 16-3 (8-6 in the MAAC) – finished 4th in the MAAC

1993-94 – 25-8 (10-4 in the MAAC) –  finished 3rd in the MAAC – NIT final four (3rd place)

1989 – Marc Brown led Siena to an 80-78 win over third-seeded Stanford in the NCAA Tournament.

1993-94 – Doremus Bennerman poured in 51 points against Kansas State in the NIT , and Siena finished third in the tournament.  Along the tourney trail, Siena also beat Georgia Tech, Bradley, and Tulane. They finished with an overall record of 25-8.

Mike Deane is presently (2013) an assistant coach under Matt Brady at James Madison.  Deane coached Brady at Siena.

Fran McCaffery

2005-2006 – 15-13 (10-8 in the MAAC) -finished 4th in the MAAC

2006-2007 – 20-12 (12-6 in the MAAC) –  finished tied for 3rd in the MAAC

2007-2008 – 23-11 (13-5 in the MAAC) – finished tied for 1st in the MAAC – NCAA round of 32

2008-2009 – 27-8 (16-2 in the MAAC) – finished 1st in the MAAC – NCAA round of 32

2009-2010 – 27-7 (17-1 in the MAAC) – finished 1st in the MAAC – NCAA round of 64

2005-2006 – Siena was picked to finish last in the MAAC, and they finished fourth.

2007-2008 – Beat Stanford who was ranked number 20 in the country, 70-67.

2008-2009 – Beat Ohio State 74-72 in first round of NCAA Tournament.

++ Siena was ranked 28th in the country in the final ESPN/USA Today coaches poll.

Fran McCaffery is presently the head coach of the University of Iowa.  The Hawkeyes are  presently (March 30, 2013) headed for Madison Square Garden to compete in the NIT finals.
