Former Bishop Gibbons of Schenectady pitching sensation, Mike DeBrino, works in the athletic department at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Meyers, Florida. DeBrino is their Community Outreach Coordinator. Florida Gulf Coast is the cinderella team that went deep into the NCAA Basketball Tournament this year (2013) . Many of you might remember DeBrino when he pitched for BG. He was the ace among high school pitchers in the late 1960s. DeBrino was in double-digits in strikeouts in every start and fanned 17 batters in one game. He was the first player in Bishop Gibbons history to be a four-year varsity regular. The speedballer signed a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1969 and reported to Vero Beach, Florida. At Vero Beach, he immediately made a big impression, striking out several major league players in a scrimmage. The very next day, he tore a muscle in his right arm, and his pitching career came to sudden halt.
