Niskayuna Captures State Crown

John Leonard and Dan Terwilliger led the Niskayuna basketball team to the New York State title in 1978.  Earlier that year, The Silver Warriors won their fifth Suburban Council title.  A close 61-60 win over Saratoga in March gave them the section II Class A championship.  Then they defeated Portchester of Section I for the Class AA title.  They won three games in the state tourney, beating Jamesville-Dewitt in the final game.  Terwilliger, Jim Bonaquist, who was named to the tournament all-star team, and backcourt ace Leonard led the Silver Warrior attack.  Leonard was the key player.  The 6′ whiz who ran the court tirelessly was voted the Suburban Council Player of the Year that season, and he also garnered the most votes by the selection committee to be named state tournament MVP.  Terwilliger was a strong rebounder and scorer. The Niskayuna coach was Tom Howley.
