Shirley “Cha Cha” Muldowney, a Nott Terrace High School graduate, boke down gender barriers in auto racing. Muldowney was the first woman to win the Winston World Points Championship in 1977 (She also won this title in 1980 and 1982). She was the first pro driver to win drag racing’s most prestigious title three times. Muldowney won the American Hot Rod Association title in 1981, and her career best speed was 327 mph. A film was produced about Muldowney’s life, and it was titled Heart Like a Wheel. There was a biographical documentary on the Arts and Entertainment channel, and the New York State Senate named her one of the “Thirty Women of Distinction.” She has been inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame and the International Motor Sports Hall of Fame. Muldowney is simply an icon in the field of motor sports.
