Paul Vellano, a 1970 graduate of Bishop Gibbons High School, was arguably the greatest lineman ever to play for the Golden Knights. His senior year, he was named the Knickerbocker News Defensive Player of the Year. He also made the All New York State Team and the Sunkist All-America First Team. After high school, Vellano attended the University of Maryland, where he led the Terrapins to an 8-3 record his senior year, and they played in the Peach Bowl, where they were beaten by the University of Georgia. He was named team MVP and to the Kodak All-America First Team. Vellano was the 13th -round draft pick of the Chicago Bears, but he signed with the Florida Blazers of the newly-formed World Football League. A broken arm ended his professional career.
