Schenectady’s John “Nig” Grabowski played for the New York Yankees in 1927. It was the Pinstripe team that featured the legendary murderer’s row. A second-string catcher, Grabowski hit .277 that year. Grabowski played in the majors for seven years and with two championship teams. After his baseball days, he returned to Schenectady and went to work for the American Locomotive Company. Grabowski died tragically in a fire in the late 1940s.
