The Capital Region has had many outstanding high school football coaches since 1950, but Brent Steuerwald of Shenendehowa ranks at the very top of the list. He’s numero uno. Steuerwald has been recognized as the Capital Region Coach of the Year 14 times, and the New York state Coach of the Year 5 times. He also was one of eight coaches nominated for national honors in 1988 and 1995. His nomination in 1995 culminated with his selection as National Coach of the Year. Steuerwald’s 2002 Plainsmen football team was one of his best ever, and they played in the Syracuse University Carrier Dome for the state championship but were defeated by Webster-Schroeder High School. I have no doubt that because of his football knowledge, organizational skills, and leadership qualities, Steuerwald would have been just as successful at the collegiate level. Besides football, he coached wrestling, track and field, and girls’ gymnastics at Shenendehowa. Steuerwald is a graduate of Notre Dame, where he played football.
