The 1927 New York Yankees

Some say they were the greatest major league baseball team ever.  The ’27 Bronx Bombers had four Hall of Fame players in Tony Lazzeri, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Earle Combs.  Their two stalwart pitchers were Herb Pennock and Waite Hoyt.  New York won 110 games that year, and they swept the World Series in four-straight games.  Other teams that would have to rank among the best ever were the 1929 Philadelphia Athletics who featured sluggers Al Simmons and Jimmie Foxx;  The 1998 Yankees who won 125 games which included the playoffs.  This squad featured Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, David Cone and David Wells among others, and they swept the World Series.  Two other strong candidates for runner-up to the ’27 Yankess were The 1975 Big Red Machine in Cincinnati and the 1961 New York Yankees.
