A 21 year-old pre-med student at North Carolina State, Kathy Ormsby, was favored to win the 10,000 meter run. Three-quarters of the way through the race, she suddenly bolted out of the stadium, headed down the road, ran onto a bridge, and jumped off. There was no indication that she was suicidal, and she had a straight-A average in high school. Her suicide attempt resulted in multiple spinal fractures, a broken rib, a puntured lung, and permanent paralysis to her legs. Her father indicated that the suicide attempt was due to the pressure she felt to succeed.
