Dave Smith was one of the great natural hitters to come out of the Capital Region. He excelled at the plate at every level, and he is in the CBA and Siena College Halls of Fame. Smith was drafted by the New York Mets in 1978, and he led his minor league team in hitting that summer with a .300 average. Smith was voted “Most Popular Met”. That summer, Willie Mays was the Mets’ hitting coach, and he traveled the minor leagues. Smith had his picture taken standing next to Mays. The picture appeared in the local newspaper under the headline “Two Great Hitters”.
