Upset Beats Man O’ War at the Graveyard of Favorites

Saratoga Race Course, with its long stretch,  has always been referred to as the “Graveyard of Favorites”.  It proved to be a very appropriate nickname on August 13,1919, when a horse named Upset beat the great Man O’ War by a half-length in the Sanford Stakes.  It was the only loss in “Big Red’s” 21 races.  There were no starting gates back then, and it was a six-furlong race.
