I’ll never forget one halftime in the locker room when I was playing basketball for the University of Massachusetts. My coach, Johnny Orr, came storming in and blurts out, “hells bells Meola, that Bialasuknia is tougher than whale manure.” Whatever that meant. Plus, I didn’t know that whale manure was that tough. Wes Bialsuknia, by the way, was the guy I was guarding, and he was known as the “Poughkeepsie Popper.” He was playing for UConn, and he was a brilliant pure shooter. He hit me for 21 points in that first half. Coach Orr went on to coach Michigan and took them to the final four one year with a kid named Ricky Green. He later moved on to Iowa State. At the Cyclone games, as he came on to the court, the fans chanted “here’s Johnny”.
