Capital Region sports fans were asking that question when Parade Magazine announced its yearly five Scholastic All-American teams. Pat Riley of Linton was left out. He had been included in every All-American poll that year (1963). In one poll, he was a first team Eastern Scholastic All-America, and in another, voted the best player in New York state.
Lew Alcindor, later known as Kareem Abdul Jabbar, a 7’1″ sophomore out of Power Memorial High School, who had played against Riley and his Linton High team in the Christmas Festival the year before, was the first team choice. Alcindor was the first sophomore ever to be named to the first team.
